Black Candied Apples

Halloween is just around the corner, and I’m looking forward to all the creative, spooky twists on traditional treats that everyone will come up with. Lately, I’ve been seeing black candied apples everywhere on Pinterest, which is a perfect Halloween alternative to the traditional red candied apple. The dark, black candy coating is pretty intense, and deliciously devilish. Try out this recipe for your next creepy Halloween party. I’m calling them Poison Apples.

Black Candied Apples
Recipe Type: Halloween Party Treat
Author: Bobby Pathammavong
Ingredients
  • Granny Smith Apples
  • wooden popsicle sticks or small twigs (washed and trimmed)
  • 1 1/2 cups of sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp black food coloring
  • candy thermometer
Instructions
  1. Line a baking sheet with wax paper and lightly coat with cooking spray. Set aside.
  2. [img src=”https://bdn.evermine.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Black-Candied-Apples-Evermine-Occasions-www.evermine.com_0005.jpg” width=”680″ height=”1020″ class=”alignnone size-full” title=”Black Candied Apples | Evermine Occasions | www.evermine.com_0005″]
  3. Wash and completely dry your apples. Remove stems and insert a twig into each apple and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. [img src=”https://bdn.evermine.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Black-Candied-Apples-Evermine-Occasions-www.evermine.com_0006.jpg” width=”680″ height=”1020″ class=”alignnone size-full” title=”Black Candied Apples | Evermine Occasions | www.evermine.com_0006″]
  5. In a large saucepan combine the sugar, water and syrup. Bring to a boil, stirring frequently, until the sugar fully dissolves. Once the sugar completely dissolves, stop stirring and cook until your candy thermometer reads 290F or soft crack stage
  6. When the mixture reaches the desired temperature remove from the heat and stir in the food coloring and cinnamon
  7. [img src=”https://bdn.evermine.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Black-Candied-Apples-Evermine-Occasions-www.evermine.com_0007.jpg” width=”680″ height=”1020″ class=”alignnone size-full” title=”Black Candied Apples | Evermine Occasions | www.evermine.com_0007″]
  8. Working quickly, dip each apple and coat with the candy mixture allowing the excess to drip off into the pot. Place back onto the baking sheet and allow it to completely set and harden. (Note: as the mixture begins to cool, bubbles will start to form. Be sure you’ve got all your apples prepared).
  9. You can store your apples uncovered in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

  11. Prepare the apples for your party with a favor tag. You can choose your own spooky saying to continue the Halloween theme.
