Featuring DIY Dino Egg birthday party favors and a free printable door sign!
I grew up with themed parties. Since my brother’s birthday and my birthday are a few days apart, my mom often threw us a joint birthday party… pirates and gypsies, cowboys and Indians, etc. They were always fun, small and personal. Since having my son Jasper, I knew I wanted to carry on the family tradition of having themed birthday parties, and since this is my son’s very first birthday, it marks a pretty big milestone.
So many of our friends have had boys, and most of the party themes had been taken, so my husband and I were stumped on what to do. One night before my son went to bed, my husband was reading Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs! by Sandra Boynton and it clicked. A dinosaur-themed party would be perfect!
So like most moms, I instantly went to Pinterest and started gathering inspiration for his party. I found some great ideas for fun party food and decor, but my favorite find was this cute idea for creating Dino Egg jars from Los Dos Aiko’s. Once I saw this, I knew I had to make these favors for his party.
How to make “Dino Egg” favor jars:
Materials:
- baby food jars, clean and rinsed
- package of vinyl mini dinosaurs from Amazon
- can of spray paint (I choose Krylon Sky Blue)
- hot glue gun and hot glue sticks
- a few bags of “eggs” (I used Paas Easter Eggs but peanut M&Ms would work great too)
- personalized favor tags (I used Modern Museo in deep red)
First I hot glued my mini dinosaurs on the baby food jar lids. Then I spray painted each dinosaur lid – it took me two coats to completely cover. While the lids were drying, I filled each of the jars with my “dino eggs.” Once the dinosaur lids were dry, I screwed them back on to the jars and put the finishing touch on them. An oval egg-shaped favor tag with the saying “DINO EGGS” from Jasper-saurus.
I decided I wanted to go big on carrying out the dinosaur theme. I ordered cupcakes from my local grocery store and had them make the icing look like grass so I could stick dinosaurs on top. Since I had 72 plastic dinosaurs (thank you Amazon), I used them for not only the dino egg favors but as table decor and cupcake toppers!
I also ordered custom dinosaur sugar cookies from a local shop here in Portland called Le Cookie Monkey. The cookies were delicious and gone within minutes – they were a huge hit!
I ordered my dinosaur plates and napkins from www.shopmerimeri.com. Once I purchased those, I knew I wanted the rest of the table decor to match. I made the water bottle labels dinosaur themed, each of them said “Prehistoric Waters – fresh from the ice age” using the Modern Museo style. I ordered them in deep red, blue mist and grass. By ordering the labels in a variety of colors, it made the party super bright and fun.
I think my favorite party trick was using the Custom style place cards, because they really brought the dinosaur theme to life. I used the custom place cards as table tents to describe what things were on the table. Below is a list of what I each place card said:
– Dino Eggs (for the Paas Easter Egg candies)
– Dino Bones (for the Rold Gold pretzel sticks)
– Dino Toe Nails (for the Bugles)
– Watering Hole (for the water bottle cooler)
– Drinkasarus (for the drink coolers and drink cups)
– Herbivore (for the fruit and veggie trays)
We had a roaring good time! [printfriendly]
