DIY Graduation Cupcake Idea #tags
When it comes to cupcakes, whether you’re making them from scratch or using a store bought cake mix, they tend to make the ideal party treat for graduation-themed events. Not only are they easy to prepare, but they also travel well and provide a flexible base for sprinkles, cupcake toppers, and other small party decorations. Plus, you can mix and match your cake (we used red velvet cake batter) and frosting (we used white cream cheese frosting) to create any number of endless color combinations.

So now that graduation season is upon us, we thought it would be fun to share these easy-to-replicate cupcake topper ideas that you can personalize based on your grad’s school colors:

Graduation Cap Cupcake Toppers:

Materials:
-Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Minis
-Chocolate Squares (we used Lindt’s bag of assorted chocolate squares)
-Red Hots (M&Ms or Skittles would work too)
-Twizzlers Pull ‘n’ Peels
-Frosting (preferably a dark colored frosting so the color blends well with the chocolate

Process:
First, unwrap your peanut butter cup minis and chocolate squares. Turn the peanut butter cups upside-down so the widest part is facing down. Using your frosting, place a pea-sized amount on the narrow end of the peanut butter cup. Hold the chocolate square upside-down so the blank side is up, and, making sure it’s centered, press it down on the frosting to create the flat portion of the graduation cap. Repeat this step to create as many caps as there are cupcakes.

In the center of each cap, place a small amount of frosting and attach a single Red Hot (or M&M, or Skittle). Peel a strand of Pull ‘N’ Peel Twizzlers, and cut (using clean scissors) in strips 2-inches in length. Gather two strips together, and flatten the ends by pressing them between your fingers. Attach to the cap near the base of the Red Hot using frosting.

Once you’ve assembled your graduation cap cupcake toppers, place them on a plate and store in the refrigerator until just before you’re ready to serve the cupcakes. The frosting will act like glue, and it will harden in the refrigerator to make them extra durable.

To create your own personalized tag cupcake toppers, browse Evermine’s collection of graduation tags for the style and color that coordinates with your school colors. Once you’ve chosen your tags, add your own cute graduation saying, such as “ConGRADulations” or “ConGRADUATIONs!” Once your tags have arrived in the mail, punch a second hole in the bottom so you can slide them onto skewers or toothpicks to decorate your cupcakes just before serving.

Josephine Guicciardi is the nom de plume of our creative Evermine blogger. With romantic connections to Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Immortal Beloved” love letters, it is in keeping with the blog’s themes of love and joy. The great composer writes the famous words “ever thine, ever mine, ever ours” to a woman who remains a mystery to this day. Two of the most likely objects of his adoration are Josephine Brunsvik and Guilietta Guicciardi, and it’s from these two women that Josephine Guicciardi draws her persona.
