Kids Make Gifts! Giant Pop Tarts
Author: Evermine

Ingredients
  • 2 cup flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter
  • ⅓ cups ice water
  • ½ cup jam
Instructions
  1. Combine the flour and salt.
  2. Cut the butter into the flour mixture with a pastry cutter.
  3. Once the largest pieces of butter are the size of peas, add the water and stir a few times.
  4. Handling the dough as little as possible, gently press the dough together to bring it into two balls.
  5. Form each ball into a small flat brick shape with rounded edges.
  6. Wrap these bricks in wax paper or plastic and refrigerate for ½ hour.
  7. On a clean flat work surface, roll out one of the refrigerated dough bricks into a large rectangle that is a little more than ⅛ inch thick. (If one of the bricks is smaller, use that one here.) Find helpful tips for rolling out pastry dough here.
  8. Cut 3" x 5" pieces with straight edges and place them on a baking sheet.
  9. Roll out the second dough brick in a similar manner, cutting out the same sized pieces again. Puncture these several times with a fork. Set these aside.
  10. Back to the pieces on your baking sheet--gently spread jam over these, leaving a clean edge about ⅓rd inch all the way around.
  11. Use small cup of water to wet your fingers and run them along the edges of one piece. Immediately, place one of the larger pieces on top and press with a fork along the edges to create a seal.
  12. Repeat this process with the rest of your dough pieces.
  13. Bake at 350 for 20-25 minutes, until the edges and bottoms become golden brown. You may also freeze these for up to 2 weeks before baking them. We don't recommend trying to bake these in a toaster.
  14. Enjoy once cooled, OR package them up for friends.
