Over the past year, my son has grown to love Elmo, or “Melmo” as he would say. So when it came time to plan his 2nd birthday party, I knew it would be Sesame Street-themed.
Being a designer, I created some custom invitations for his party. I love that Evermine has the ability to print custom invitations, party labels and so much more. Once the invites were sent, I was on the hunt for a party favor for all the kids.
Since my son adores Elmo, I thought we could make a favor incorporating the two things Elmo loves the most: goldfish and crayons.
I bought little 8-packs of Crayola crayons from Target, individually wrapped the Goldfish crackers, and put both of them in a cellophane bag with a personalized tag saying, “Elmo loves his goldfish and his crayons too… Thank you for being a part of JASPER’S WORLD today!”
And I paired the favors up with Sesame Street coloring books I found at the Dollar Tree.
I set the all kids’ party favor bags on a Chalkboard easel, and each of their names were written on the favor tags. Each kid got to take their favorite character coloring book home with them when they left the party.
As for the other party decor, I purchased the Elmo party plates…
…and the awesome 6-foot Sesame Street backdrop from Amazon. It’s gigantic, and really helped set the stage for the party. Once the folds of the backdrop mellowed out, it made for a great place to take photos throughout the party. I also bought just some plain red party plates, napkins and table cloths from Dollar Tree to help incorporate the Elmo color more for the party.
I went pretty simple this year for the party food. We had Sesame Street smoothie squeeze packs, granola bars and crackers. The “smoothies” were the big hit of the party. All the kids loved picking out their favorite Sesame Street character. All the food was labeled with custom place cards that I designed to look like the Sesame Street sign.
And I, of course, had to order special sugar cookies from Le Cookie Monkey, which is a local shop here in Portland, because the cookies were such a huge hit at last year’s party. They did such a wonderful job making the Elmo cookies!
In addition to the Elmo cookies, I made some funfetti cupcakes, and topped each one with Sesame Street cupcake toppers I made with custom labels and toothpicks.
I used the same designs to create the labels on the mini water bottles.
And for the finishing touch, we have a tradition in our family of having our guests sign in our guest book – it’s what everyone does at our house before they leave. But we thought we could make it more special by having all our guests sign in an Elmo book that my son could keep. I used this phrase for the chalkboard:
Stop here you see, and write a very special message to me. A birthday wish or just say hi, to your favorite TWO year old guy. On the front, the back, or any pages, it’s something I will treasure for all my ages.
Happy 2nd Birthday Jasper!
