Simple Gifts: Packaged Chocolates

It seems like this favor created itself. I had no idea what I wanted it to be, but I found an adorable product while browsing a canned food outlet – these little boxes of chocolate squares – which were very inexpensive and cute, and there were dozens of them… and the very best part is, I discovered that Evermine label shape 04 fit them just perfectly!

This is how it came about: when I found the little boxes of chocolates I saw they would be a good candidate for favors if I could find a label shape that would fit. They looked like shape 4 might fit, so I checked evermine.com on my cell phone for the dimensions of the shape 4 label. The dimensions are 1 – 1/4 x 4. Then I needed to check the size of the boxes. I carried one of them over to the school supplies section of the store and used a ruler to measure it. The dimensions looked like they would be a good fit for the labels, but I did not know how perfect they would be until I actually put one on! This is a good example of how the product and its packaging grow together; sometimes you start with the label and adjust the packaging to fit, and sometimes you find a package and find a label that fits.

Guidelines for Simple Gifts:
• Plan ahead. Think about and decide what you want to do well in advance so you can do the shopping portion of the giftmaking along with other errands. Have all materials and ingredients on hand when it is time to make the gift.

• Packaging. Pretty packaging makes any gift special. Arm yourself with a supply of small boxes or cellophane bags and ribbon. We also recommend having your own personalized tags or labels on hand. Use generic wording so they can be used on a multitude of items. For example, mom’s tags and labels say “with love from Grammie.” With no reference to what the item is, they can be used on anything!

• It is not the item itself that is special; it is the idea that you think enough about a person to prepare something personally for them. Sometimes your gift doesn’t even have to be handmade; but hand-assembled. Follow this monthly series and you will see examples of both.
