Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I was born and raised in Texas and currently reside here with my husband and our one-year-old son. I love cooking, getting outdoors with our dog, shopping, and all things crafty.
What events led you to start B Sweet Soap?
After we had our son last June, I started looking for a new hobby to take on during my time away from work to just relax and have fun with. I stumbled upon soap making and instantly knew I wanted to explore it further. I began with making simple soap bars, adding in natural ingredients that are good for the skin such as coconut oil, sea salt, oats, and honey. I thought to myself, “Hmm… this seems a lot like baking!” Before I knew it, I was ditching the bar soaps and creating soap desserts! I’ve always enjoyed getting creative with baking and decorating actual desserts, so it all just sort of fell into place for me. People seemed to positively respond to the projects I posted online and would always ask about purchasing them, so I made the decision to go for it and create an online shop. I have so much fun with everything from the creative process to the packaging and am never looking back!
Describe a normal work day for you:
First things first: coffee. If my husband is working I typically spend the morning with our son until he goes down for a nap. I then read my emails, check outstanding orders, get my supplies together, and get to work! I recently purchased a planner, so I’ve been trying to keep up with that and now check it before I get started with the work day. I get most of my work done when my husband is off work or later in the evening. It’s definitely a challenge some days balancing a new business and being a stay-at-home mom, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. I could not do it without my other half. He’ll get the little one out of the house if I’m swamped with work, so they get to play and I get caught up on orders. Win-win! My husband and family have always been so supportive, which keeps things moving and growing. I couldn’t do it without them.
Do you have a favorite soap – if so, which one?
I would say my favorite soap would have to be the lavender soap popsicle bar. It’s half all natural goat milk soap and half natural vegetable glycerin, so it leaves my skin feeling extra silky smooth and moisturized. Lavender essential oil has always been one of my favorites, as it has a calming quality and washes the stress away (literally!). The fact that it looks like a popsicle makes it that much more delightful!
What advice would you give to someone who wants to start their own business?
#1 is be sure it’s something you’re passionate about and have fun with. One of my favorite quotes is, “Do what you love, love what you do.” I am happy to say I now live by that. Also, one thing I learned the hard way is to be sure you are stocked up on your supplies. I would run out of an important supply and get a large order that required it. I then had to spend an arm and a leg to get it rush shipped in time to complete the order. Not fun! Lastly, know your worth and set a budget. You do have to spend money to make money, but be sure you’re spending it the right way while pricing your items appropriately. I am improving on that and learning more every day. It’s been rewarding so far!
I use Evermine because:
I researched many websites and services when I first got started and instantly fell in love with Evermine’s unique designs. I like that I’m able to order smaller quantities to check it out first without breaking the bank. I have a lot of fun trying out new labels and tags for my different products. The quality is always perfect, not to mention the customer service has been beyond satisfying! My business wouldn’t be what it is today without them!
