Sunflower Seed Wedding Favors

On a perfect day last August in the most beautiful spot on earth (Applegate Valley in rural southern Oregon), two people were married on a farm with all the happy family as witnesses to the occasion. I know this because I was there; I was Aunt Jeanne; my nephew, John married his sweet bride Christina. They wore the traditional, he in formal black and white, she in a foamy white gown and veil. The flower girls were sweet and tiny and dressed like princesses; most of them carefully sprinkled their petals where the bride was to tread. The event transpired on a grassy hillside of the Applegate Farm; the couple stood under an ancient madrona tree; horses nearby pretended not to notice.

After the vows, the teary-eyed guests happily moved their chairs to the banquet area where tables were covered with white linen tablecloths, and upon which little muslin bags were carefully placed to look like they had been casually tossed. They were filled with brightly-colored chocolate-covered sunflower seeds; little jewels. Children everywhere were seen carrying their little bags, fingers and mouths mussed up with chocolate.

There was the fabulous food – picnic fare – tri-tip steak and chicken and homemade barbecue sauce, au gratin potatoes, numerous salads, iced tea and strawberry lemonade; there were the toasts long and short from some nervous and some seasoned speakers; there was the first dance, and then more dancing. And there was the glorious cake. And at the end, as people began to slip away, there were here and there, muslin bags of sunflower seeds left on the tables, asking to be brought home. So I brought some home to share with you, so you could see for yourselves a little part of that lovely day.

Jeanne and her husband David launched My Own Labels in January of 2000. It was a spin-off of their successful graphic design firm, plus it allowed Jeanne to incorporate her love of baking, making, sewing and creating. Today David and Jeanne continue to be the heart of the operation both creatively and practically.
