(Used in this project: Large Labels in Champagne style and Medium Paper Favor Bags.)
Traditionally, wedding guests have thrown rice at the departing bride and groom to bid them fruitfulness. While some couples prefer confetti, rose petals, or even paper airplanes, there is bound to be some clean up involved. Choosing birdseed as a festive send off is a fun way to keep up with the tradition and is completely self cleaning! Your feathered friends will do the work at cleaning up the venue and thank you for it.
Is throwing birdseed better than throwing rice? You may have heard the folklore that if birds ate uncooked rice grains thrown at weddings, the grains would expand and the birds would explode. This is simply not true. Birds eat all sorts of grains, including rice, but they will be much more eager to flock to clean up a venue if it contains their favorite tasty treat of millet, sunflower seeds, and nuts.
To make up these cute packets, use the medium size paper favor bags. I used the Champagne style large labels in turquoise for them as the champagne bubbles looked like confetti to me – perfect! Fill up the bags with a wild bird seed made for your area. To seal, I folded the top over a few times and added an oval label in the same style to the back to secure it.
Display the seed packets at the exit of the wedding venue, but ensure they are indoors so that the birds don’t get a taste of them before the big send off. They would look wonderful lined up in a basket and your guests will undoubtedly know what to do when the time comes.
